Medusa.

My family is Greek, so I grew up with the myths and stories. But also because of a movie I saw when I was young. It was one of those early special effects films where the monsters were done with claymation. Her scene wasn't scary like ARGH-CHAINSAW-NECK-BLOOD, or GAH-VIOLIN-JAB, but ... come on, her hair is snakes and just looking at her turns you into stone.

Then again, Perseus kinda cut her head off... so
