Spirit DayGrowing up, I was one of those annoying kids who was popular, talented at music & art and passed all my exams without studying, teachers pet, etc. I was forever in the local press for winning prizes for playing in various musical events & was lucky enough to win a scholarship to send me to a specialist music school for gifted children on the weekends. In the midst of all of this however, I was going through a particularly nasty time with a group of local kids who taunted me about my family constantly.I wasn't brought up with my natural family and didn't find out about this until I was 14. Most of the local kids knew all about this and knew who my "real" Mum was because she went to school with their parents. Sounds like a soap opera, I know -- and sure it was at the time . I don't mean to be flippant about it, it's taken me 26 years to put it into a comfortable perspective. At the time though, it took me on a journey of self harming, eating disorders, risk taking behaviour a
dArama: Let's get solution-focusedHello, lovelies! For months now, there have been whispers of dissatisfaction and discomfort concerning our photomanipulation community. For some of you, it no longer seems like a home. For others, it is becoming ransacked with things that did not belong, like pornography, inflations, decapitations, and celebrity images. With the addition of copyright violations off-site, those whispers have become screams of discontent about dA in general.I hear you, and as a liaison between dA staff and the community, I am doing my best to ensure your voices are heard. But, what are YOU doing about it?YOU are empowered to do a lot, too. For every complaint, for every disgruntled member of our community, there is a solution. And that solution does NOT have to involve leaving dA.Let's talk about some of those solutions.Tired of not having a DD?Suggest your own work. If it is not accepted, ask for a critique and work to learn from it. Even if you do not agree with it, there is surely somet

Interning at deviantARTHighlights after 6 months:iconnamenotrequired:Today, it's exactly 6 months since Heidi and Toby invited me to work with them! I'd like to look back at some of the highlights of this time The tl;dr is that it's been fantastic. ~ $namenotrequiredThe best partsI never had to ask for it or apply. I was personally invited the first time, and I was asked to keep it up each time my contract ran out. It's a paid position, and I can work from home (i.e. wherever and whenever suits me), both pretty rare traits of internships.Okay, just kidding. Those are pretty nice, but they weren't really the best parts. The best part is what I get to do and for whom!My roleSo what do I do exactly? Well... Do you hav

Odyssey, Clive and PETAFor those just tuning in, I have the privilege of working very closely with the Odyssey II Project with Clive Barker and I couldn't be more excited. The following is my personal opinion on the project, Clive and PETA, so I encourage you to direct any conversation regarding what you read here, to the comments below, so I can respond First, I'm a huge fan of Clive Barker's work. His artwork and his stories have entranced me for years but beyond that, he's truly a deviant. *CliveBarker has become an active member of the community, submitting his artwork and commenting on others. He's a perfect fit in my opinion, but that's not entirely why I'm writing today.Clive's initial choice for a cause to donate the proceeds of this project to, is PETA and if you've been watching the #ODYSSEYPROJECT unfold, you've certainly seen several opinions in regards to the organization. If you know me at all,
Daily Deviation Report: January 2013Hallo, and welcome to my second Daily Deviation Report. What follows is a comprehensive feature of the Daily Deviations that I featured during the month of January 2013 in the Abstract and Surreal categories. Additionally, there also a number of Conceptual works included this month as I helped out during a time when there was no Conceptual CV in place. That, of course, has now been put to rest with the appointment of ^astridle in the role.In terms of this collection, all of these images caught my eye in some way; whether it be through technical perfection, compositional intrigue, or the concept within. I am proud to present these works, and I applaud the relevant artists for their dedication and inspiration.January 1st in Conceptual111212 18:09 by *encorineJanuary 2nd in AbstractItaly B
PE Abstract and Surreal: MindgamesThe de-materialization of artworkIt is necessary to point out first of all, that this article is not about landscape or portrait photography at all. Their main subject does not provide much room for interpretation because it is designed to appeal to aesthetical senses. It also is not about spontaneous snapshots – in which the photographer has to give up much of his or her control about what appears in their viewfinder. And, it’s also not about photography that is created just for the purpose of decoration and therefore usually does not have such a conceptual depth as the work which this article explores. It’s about photographs which are provoking a certain thought process and are alive in the mind of the viewer. It explores photographs in which abstraction and optical illusions are used as a stylistic device and which are challenging the viewer to play “Mind Games”.Achieving such a
Photography Weekly: Edition Thirty NinePhotography Weekly Header created by ~TouchedD"Let your words be few - and your exposures many"-Unknown Earlier this week I was stalking a photography forum (because it's where all the cool kids are) and I noticed somebody claiming to be a fairly professional photographer angling for information on the best mega-pixels D-SLR camera they could get in order to stabilise their images. Well anybody who knows even a tiny inkling about Photography will very quickly jump on that as most of us know full well that no matter how many megapixels you've got, they aren't worth a thing without a steady hand or more importantly a good sturdy tripod. I never was a firm believer in a tripod and even now, I rarely use it. However I use any number of things to stabilise myself when shooting whether that involves lying in a bed of flowers, resting against a wall or indeed using the nearest person (which I don't recommend - people sway!) However it's not difficult to get
