If I'm assisting you with a Help Desk ticket please bear with me, I will respond to anyone I can before the day is out but any new tickets after today will have to wait the holiday. The rest of the amazing communityops team is checking over the General Help and Bug Reports section for any fires. If there is an emergency one of them will be able to assist you. Otherwise I will be returning to work on Tuesday and will catch up with the lot of you then.
I truly appreciate your patience during this time. Rest assured that all Help Desk tickets will get answered after my return.
PreviousLast year was an absolute whirlwind of emotion and change. Plans were made, set in motion, then thrown out the window to start over from scratch. Both in my personal and professional life.
I'm sure you've all noticed the professional changes to some degree. I won't go into it fully but suffice it to say our team has become a lot smaller. The second half of the year has certainly been trying, but we have survived and will continue to do so. Emotionally the change cut much deeper. At least with actual work you have so much to do that you can distract yourself and feel productive. But with emotion it takes time and that just seems to go on forever… Being left behind I hope I can live up to the standards they helped set and continue to do all I can to make this site a fun and helpful place for all artists.
As for my personal life, things are okay. Cory and I reserved ourselves to what we thought our future had to be and made plans to enjoy it the way it was. That turned out to be travel. We had started to plan such amazing trips to far off corners of the globe and just enjoy ourselves but things have changed. Turns out we're not as stuck as we thought we were. Our 5 year plan has changed yet again. I'm starting to think planning just doesn't even make sense anymore. I'm gonna just start riding the waves and see where life takes us.
NextThings are changing again and fast. We've thrown one hell-of-a ball in the air and we're just waiting for it to come back down. Again, both in personal and professional life. When personal stuff starts its decent from the clouds I'll be sure to keep you updated. As for professional, well… if you're a beta tester I'm sure you've noticed a lot of changes to the site happening. It's been a long time coming and if you've been paying close attention in the past couple of years the direction we're headed should be apparent. Things are happening slowly, so it feels a bit disjointed, but we want to get your feedback on ever step of the way so we know we've got things right. I hope you can bear with us. It's a lot of little switches that are flipping but the end game will certainly be better for it.
I want to write more journals this year. I've said so in the past but I do feel disjointed. With the extra work load that feeling has grown exponentially. I hope in some small way it'll bring me back. Artwork is rare for me now-a-days. I sketch periodically and bake/decorate for my artistic outlet but never quite feel pleased with the results enough to add to my gallery. Do you guys have any thoughts on what can be done to make me feel more present? I help hundreds of you a week and leave comments where I can but I know it's nothing like I used to. I really wanna break out of that bad habit and hope you can help!
CelebrationThere have been quite a lot of changes on DeviantArt recently. Some good, some bad, some unbelievably sad, but today is our birthday and I'm gonna party like it's 1999!
Below are my answers to the question meme about my account and my time here. You should totally copy them from the official birthday article and make your own! Speaking of the official birthday article, don't forget to comment on it so you get your much coveted 15th BirthDAy badge! I don't wanna hear you complaining in the helpdesk that you didn't get yours. ;)
- How long have you been on DeviantArt?
I was a cruiser and desktop stealer from late 2000/early 2001 but finally took the plunge and created an account on Sep. 23, 2003! It's almost my accounts 12th birthday!
- What does your username mean?
My username is named after the voice actor for Pikachu from the cartoon series Pokémon; Ikue Ōtani. When pokémon first came out I was obsessed and my folks bought me a themed calendar and I noticed her birthday linked up with a special day of my own so I adopted it as my online handle. You'll find me across the www with the handle ikue or pikachu or some combination of the two.
- Describe yourself in three words.
I choose you!
- Are you left or right handed?
When I was little I would write with my left hand but in primary school they literally beat it out of me. I'm a righty now, and can't even fathom how to write with my left.
- What was your first deviation?
A desktop wallpaper I made based on a tutorial I found to teach myself Photoshop.
- What is your favourite type of art to create?
My favourite type of art to make is always the next piece I'm going to create. I honestly don't like to be bogged down by genre when it comes to art. There are so many different kinds and ways to make it, I just like to see where the inspiration takes me. Right now it's baking. Yesterday it was photomanips. Tomorrow it could be anything!
- If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?
Calligraphy/Typography. I love to dabble, but just don't have the time to practice!
- What was your first favourite?
- What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?
Probably digital art.More specifically Vector.
- Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?
Oh man… that's an impossible question to answer! It depends on what I'm in the mood for that day. There are so many varied artists that make me squeal in delight every time one of their masterpieces graces my notifications centre I truly can't decide.
- If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?
- How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?
So many of you have taught me that it's okay not to fit it. That I could stray from the norm and still be loved and that I will always cherish.
- What are your preferred tools to create art?
Illustrator, Photoshop, Ballpoint Pen, HTML, CSS, Camera, Cooking Ingredients, whatever else I can get my hands on!
- What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?
The internet! Working from home I don't get out much, so it's nice to have an enormous source of inspiration just a click away.
- What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?
There are so many but one of my most vivid is from the Vector Week program I ran for projecteducate waaaay back in July of 2008. I met some of the most amazing people and shared my favourite art style at the time with some of the best artists in that genre. We talked for countless hours about art and nothing at all and formed a bond I don't think will ever be broken. It was educational for me in so many ways more than just what vector art really was. It's so hard to put into words… I just love everything about that week, even the crappy setbacks and arguments. It was such an amazing rollercoaster.
Age of the geek!June is my Christmas! With #WWDC this week and #E3 next week I'll be geeking out all over the place! It all kicks off today with the Apple keynote. I can't wait to see what all comes out of Cupertino this week. Then directly on its heels is E3! I'm a bit disappointed that Zelda WiiU was pushed back but I look forward to what other surprises Nintendo and the other developers have in store for us.
Ch-ch-changes…It has been ages since I last wrote a journal… The last one I posted was a feature and the time before was back in January. I really need to do a better job. In that time quite a bit has transpired. We've had to say goodbye to a number of amazing coworkers who are sorely missed. We're also in the midst of rebranding and simplifying. A great way to follow along and see what's coming up next is to view the Timeline. We've got loads of past events on there and you can get a glance at upcoming releases to see where we're headed.
Change is always a bit scary but we're hoping that by being as transparent as possible and providing weekly updates on the subjects it won't be as startling. Feel free to voice your thoughts on the announcement articles, but I implore you to try keep an open mind.
Summer Lovin'Most of the primetime TV shows have ended or are winding down and we're now in the midst of the off-season summer shows. I'm looking forward to a few of them. Surprisingly I'm super interested in the Netflix shows that have been coming out. I've been slowing chipping away at Daredevil and just finished Sense8 this weekend. OITNB is coming out soon and I soon won't have time to sleep. It used to be that Summer I could catch up on my primetime shows and watch the occasional summer show. Now-a-days though TV is year round. I've got so many promising summer shows there's no reprieve. I really hope that the Netflix formatting becomes the norm. Binge watching a good show is amazing. And no commercials is just heavenly. Could you imagine a season of Hannibal in one day? Glorious! If I could cancel my cable TV I would in a heartbeat. We're pretty backwards here though. You need a basic tv package in order to have internet. I can't even remember the last time I turned on my cable box…
Flying TimeI guess the old adage is true. Time really does fly when you're having fun. This past Sunday marked my 5-year work Anniversary with DeviantArt. It's been an exciting rollercoaster of events. So much has changed and grown since I joined the staff. I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to everyone. It's been a wild ride and I can't wait to keep stepping into the unknown with all of you.
In the brief time I've been in an official capacity to help all of you I've solved well over 96k helpdesk tickets through zendesk. I was hoping to hit the 100k mark by my anniversary, but you guys seem to have everything under control! I guess that's a good thing… I suppose if I were to try and add the couple hundred tickets I solved through our old helpdesk system whilst I was early on in my training Not to mention the notes and comments I receive I may be closer to that goal but I'm not gonna split hairs. It's been an absolute blessing helping all of you these past few years. I hope in the most part it was as good for you as it was for me!
Rabbit HoleThe big reveal is finally among us. You've been down the rabbit hole and now it's time to take a peek through the looking glass at the future of DeviantArt.
It's been such an honour being a part of this amazing experience. I've been through some amazing projects during my time on staff and experienced many from my time as a member but none of them can compare to this. I hope you all take a moment to read over Our Story and soak it all in. It's because of you, the community, that we are who we are today. It's because of you that this change is even possible. And believe me… there is much more in store for the future!
Your StoryYou clicked it, you shared it, you hypothesized on it. What do you think of it? I know a few of you got it dead on and others came very close. What do you think of the rebrand? How does it fit in with your DeviantArt story? Are you excited for the launch of the official DeviantArt mobile app on Dec 10th? Share in the comments below or on the announcement article! I can't wait to see the communities reaction.
Returning Champs! With so many returning champions last Friday it's no wonder I seemed to have skipped over the entire weekend. We saw both the release of the long anticipated #SmashBros reboot for the #WiiU and the release of #Pokemon #ORAS remake done in the X & Y engine. I can't decide which to play!
Smash BrosWith only one 3DS between both shuttermonkey and myself that decision was pretty much made for me. While Cory collected his favourite pocket monsters I took the opportunity to refine my Smash skills. The next day I had a little get together with my brothers and we played Smash for hours! It was so fun. I remember waking up on the weekends and battling it out in various games with my siblings and this was such a great sense of nostalgia. 8 Player Smash is such an amazing addition to this game. We pitted the 4 of us against 4 terribly hard CPU's and had a blast getting our butts kicked and kicking a bit ourselves. I also got a couple of #amiibo to kick off my collection. Pikachu and Mario to start and hope to gain a few more as I'm able.
PokémonI've slowly been catching up in Pokemon while Cory has been at work the past few days but I've got a ways to go yet. Just enjoying the ride really. It's been so long since I've played the original that this feels like a completely new experience. I am absolutely loving the Dex Nav app in the game. Knowing what other pokémon are in the area that I haven't caught yet really is a blessing. I find myself hating to move to a new route until I've got everything from that area! It's really helping me play more. Can't wait to see what other features are in store.
With the long Thanksgiving weekend fast approaching I can't wait to do it all over again and play games 'til my eyes bleed! Who's with me?
Our experience, in a word, was Phenomenal. We had the absolute best time ever in New York. Our hotel was perfect, the experiences were outstanding, we didn't want to leave!
Next time we won't be bogged down with all the tourist stuff so we can actually venture out and hook up with people! We honestly didn't know where the time had gone. It just flew by. There was so much to do and to see we were going nonstop. Luckily we got all of the tourist trap spots out of the way this go round. It was such a bummer to wait in line for so long. We seriously spent more time on lines waiting to get into the attractions than we actually spent viewing the attraction itself. We were lucky enough to save a few bucks via a CityPass ticket book but man, I hope to never stand in another line again… Really the only main attraction we missed was the top of the rock. I am still pissed with myself for losing those tickets. There is always a next time though!
After New York we returned to put the final touches on our Halloween Birthday party for shuttermonkey. He turned turned 30! So naturally we have to celebrate in style. There was a lot of food (way too much food, anyone want some?) a lot of fun, and a lot of crazy costumes! It was a blast. Never again will I be planning such a large affair… It's way too hectic and stressful. Even now I still feel like I forgot something! but anyway, if you haven't already, go glomp the monkey and congratulate him on 30 years of taking up space on this rock we call a home.
Now it's back to work… bear with me while I play catch up. :B
How did you guys spend the last couple of weeks. Have any interesting halloween stories to share? What's the haps?!
Moved!Yup… yet again shuttermonkey and I have moved. It's only been a little over a year since we last moved but when this new place presented itself we couldn't say no. We're not too far from our old place, actually it's really only about 2 blocks away, but it's inside a fairly nice neighbourhood while our old place was just outside. We feel like part of the elite now. Unfortunately it's less bedrooms than we had before, however, the space difference is massive so it more than makes up for it. The new place is double the size of our old place. It's so welcome especially for the cats. They've got so much more space to roam and run around. One of the biggest draws of this new place is that it's a favour for a friend of the family so he gave us an amazing deal on the rent. Which happens to include electricity so we can run the central air all day without worry! I no longer have to melt while I work from home during the day. It's so amazing. In all we're saving about an extra 400-500 a month. Which bring me to my next update!
Vacation!Cory and I are both turning 30 this year (I can't believe we're both this old), and November marks our 15 year anniversary, Anyway… because we're able to save some extra money and because such big milestones don't come along all that often we're gonna celebrate while we can. So we're heading to #NewYork! It's been a dream of ours to go there and we're finally making it a reality. We're beyond excited! We have so many things to do I just hope we can get most of them done in 8 days we're gonna be there. I doubt we'll get everything done, but we know for certain this wont be our only trip there! You guys have any ideas of things we need to check out?
Halloween!Segwaying right into our next topic! Cory is born on Halloween and it's both our favourite time of the year! We're so looking forward to a spooky time in New York but also we're throwing a costume bash after we get back. I can't wait to start watching all my favourite spooky movies we save up every year for this time. Hope you guys have awesome plans too!

The staff were asked to help populate the thought drawings pool and naturally I took a crack at it. Could you tell which ones were mine? Did any of you happen to get one that I made? I've seen quite a few of the ones I made make it to the most popular view which is mind blowing. I've never been there with my own art. XD It's kinda flattering.
So I screwed the pooch on this one… It appears the name TypeFight is already taken by another organization and they contacted me asking to resolve the confusion. I should have done my due diligence and researched the project a bit more but in my excitement I got carried away and pushed forward blindly. My Apologies
To that end I will be rebuilding the group on a new name. No longer will it be TypeFight, from henceforth you can find us at TypeBattle. All of the links and logos have been updated to reflect this new change. The journals and polls will be unaffected so if you have them faved or bookmarked you wont need to update your links. The old group will remain open for the next day or so while I migrate our early entrance fighters to the new group. In the mean time, I ask that all spectators please visit the new group and add that to your watchlist so you are kept up to date on the new battles.
Thanks for your understanding.
Help You This Year
I thought I'd do things a bit differently this year in regards to my New Year Resolutions. I already know what I want to accomplish this year in regards to my personal life, but I'm not sure exactly what I should strive for when it comes to my deviantART life. So I ask you; what is it you think I should do this year? Please leave your suggestions in the comments below. I'd love to hear what it is you guys think I should be doing more/or less to help make deviantART a better place for you.
ginkgografix is an awesome person and all around excellent artist. She throws this project every year and it really does take a lot of effort to pull off. Please go give her some love and support!
