A typical Bahamian still life. It has all the amenities of home; our gorgeous waters, a native fish (the Sergeant) and a Conch shell (pronounce "konk"). Though I wanted to make it a bit challenging so I made it under water... well... half-n-half. So I hope it's not so typical...
This painting was one of the considerations for recieving a free copy of Painter 11 (you can read a review here). And as such everything you see here was done in that program. The clouds and water reflection (or is it refraction?) were the hardest parts. I'm not a big fan of typical bahamian art but I was the last person to get my copy of the software and had some catching up to do. So once I had it installed I just went with the first thing that popped into my head.
Anyway I'm anxious to know what you think, so I've enabled the advanced critique option. Please make use of it
And if you're ever in the bahamas be sure to try the Conch Salad or Crack Conch, you won't be sorry
The colors are great and do catch a true hue of the beach and the underwater is nice, I think it could be a little stronger. Still very nice. Also I think where the water line is that needs some work (maybe a different kind of blending) it has more of a sky effect in its background. The front part is really cool and hits the mark. Overall the image is truly magnificent!! The conch shell is brilliant and true to the colors it should be. The fish, only thing I see is a little more detail needed with the mouth and maybe the eye. Love the lines on it however and the refections on it are great. I love the bubbles, the starfish kinda flat but still adds amazing interest to the overall piece. I say just thank you for creating this because it really took me to a much need place when I look at it. I miss home in Florida. Beautiful work.
Vision: 5 stars Why? The vision to this is very non-cliche, and I like that. Honestly, usually when people get ahold of a new program, they attempt a simple, typical experiment, usually involving some abstract lines and/or a figure. You decided to go the full way, and create a very appealing piece first try. ~
Originality: 4 stars Why? Underwater scapes and scenes are often created by many artists. I think that because not many people understand the wonders of the world under da' sea, it is very intriguieng and an interesting subject of choice for creating art. A fish, some coral and sand, is a rather cliche subject matter, but what makes yours so lovely and original is that the lighting you acheived is marvelous, and the water level is not dead straight/calm and therefore does not appear so linear. The bobbing curve of the gentle wave is a gorgeous touch, as are the angles and particular shadows.
Technique: 5 stars Why? Gorgeous technique you got going here ! Honestly I can't see anything wrong/bad about it. The reflections and light-sourcing are beautiful, despite you mentioning that they were some of the hardest parts. You pulled them off with an amazing amount of detail and accuracy.
Impact: 4.5 stars Why? Personally, I find this piece absolutely stunning <3 Just sayin'. I think that the way you used the colours really accentuated the atmosphere you were trying to portray, and I feel that the composition gives the [piece a wonderful atmospheric impact that transports you to the beach this is set in. The only improvements I can see is perhaps that the little whitish, flowery thing between the conch shell and starfish 9it kinda looks like a slice of cucumber xD) would set the piece off and balance better if it was a shade of blue.
Overall:
A wonderful piece of work, I love the colours and the shading, lines, lighting, reflections, clouds and sea-life. Not much to improve here, truly excellent <3
Tampa, only I traveled to the coast often. Sarisota, Cesta Key, Long Boat Key and many others. Im sure I slaughtered the spelling of those places, beautiful places and magical beaches. Its home.
I've been to Ft. Lauderdale, we were young however, well yeah bout that. To say the lest I have a small story about the place. We went to Spring Break and stayed on the strip. Not the place to have a 14yr. old and her friend. Would like to go back one day with grown up eyes. Was it an art University?
